ABBREVIATIONS & ACRONYMS RELATED TO COMPUTER AND CELL-PHONES

In this article, we will discuss abbreviations and acronyms related to computer and cell-phones, which we make use of everyday in our contemporary world.
USB
Meaning:
USB stands for Universal Serial Bus.  It is a type of external peripheral interface or a type of computer port which can be used to connect external equipment to a computer with low-cost cable, using serial transmission. 
USB could be used with keyboards, mice (plural of mouse), printers, scanners, some photocopiers, and removable hard drives like flash-drives and models.  Owing to its universal size, USB is now supported by all popular operating systems.

Examples of Usage of the acronym USB:
(i)                Documents are usually sent from computers to printers with the use of USB cables.
(ii)             “Please print out the five photographs opened on my laptop with USB cable connection”, the supervisor told his typist.
(iii)            USB cables should not be folded roughly to avoid internal cuts and disconnections.
(iv)           Water is destructive to all USB devices; therefore, they should be kept dry always.
(v)              USB is now replacing serial ports and parallel ports owing to its low cost and ease of usage.
JPEG or jpg
Meaning:
The acronym JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group.  JPEG is the most commonly used format for photographs online.   It is specifically good for colour photographs and for images with many blends or gradients.
Most organizations which provide forms for completion online with requirement of photographs these days, usually ask the applicants to upload such photographs in JPEG format because of its suitability and ease of retrieval.    
Examples of Usage of the acronym JPEG:
(i)                JAMB has published for the 2020 UTME examination and has invited interested candidates to apply online with their pass-port size photographs in JPEG format.
(ii)             Photographs in JPEG format usually take much smaller space than those in Microsoft Word format.
(iii)           “Please send me your recent pass-port size photograph both in jpg and in MS Word formats”, the Recruitment Officer told the job applicant.
(iv)            Have you ever sent a photograph from your mobile phone using jpg?
(v)             Both WAEC and NECO usually require their candidates to upload their photographs on their examination registration forms in JPEG format.

SMS
Meaning:
SMS stands for Short Message Service or Short Messaging Service which we also call ‘text-message’ or simply ‘text’.   As most of us know, SMS is supported by all Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) mobile phones and also by computers, using various applications.
When an SMS message is sent from a device, it goes to a Short Message Service Centre (SMSC), which, in turn, communicates with mobile networks to determine the subscriber's location.  Then, the message is forwarded as a small data packet to the destination device for delivery to the recipient.
SMS is now one of the most frequently-used methods of communication because of its affordability, and as a result, it has become a big business.  According to Portio Research, over 8.6 trillion text messages are being sent globally every year.
Examples of Usage of the acronym SMS:
(i)                How much does MTN charge for each SMS message?
(ii)             Did you see my SMS message concerning the ongoing UTME registration?
(iii)           The General Manager asked his secretary to send bulk SMS messages to all departmental managers for an emergency meeting.
(iv)           It is advisable to delete stale SMS messages from your cell phone to free the device memory for new entries.
(v)             Jennifer spends much time SMSing her friends each day.
MMS
Meaning:
The acronym MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service.   MMS is a method of sending a message from one mobile device to another (provided there is compatibility).   It is also possible to send MMS messages from a mobile phone to an email address.  
Unlike SMS which conveys only text, MMS can convey text, sound, images and video.   This is why some reporters are able to send reports to their media houses or offices with MMS.
Examples of Usage of the acronym MMS:
(i)                “Please MMS your report on the by-election to the newsroom before 4.00pm today”, the Sub-Editor instructed the Warri beat reporter.
(ii)              MMS has become a convenient and cheap way of sending messages across the globe.
(iii)           Does your cell phone send out MMS messages?
(iv)           “Peter, are you good at MMSing?”, asked Andrew. 
(v)             Dr. Thomas Dierukevwe, the mass communication lecturer, instructed his students to send their field-trip findings to him through MMS.
